My name is Chalet Moleni, and I am a graphic designer/ illustrator from Hilo, Hawaiʻi currently living in Waikoloa. I created this piece for the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival to honor the immigrant communities who played an essential role in building the Kona coffee industry. Workers from Japan, China, the Philippines, and Portugal traveled far from their homelands, sacrificing comfort, and familiarity in search of opportunity. Their resilience and cultural traditions became deeply rooted in Kona’s soil, shaping not only the coffee industry but the identity of the community as well.
The woman in the dress represents Hawaiʻi and its people. She stands as a symbol of gratitude, a visual embodiment of the aloha and respect held for the generations of hands that cultivated the land before us.
This piece is both a tribute and a reminder that Kona coffee is more than an agricultural product, it is a story of migration, sacrifice, and cultural pride.
